TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Michel Martelly, one candidate in Haiti’s presidential runoff election is campaigning in Florida.

Michel Martelly will meet Thursday with the Haitian-American community in Tampa. Another Haitian musician, Pras Michel of the Fugees, is expected to join him to launch a project supporting earthquake survivors in the Tampa Bay area.

Martelly is a popular singer better known as “Sweet Micky.” He faces former first lady Mirlande Manigat in Haiti’s March 20 runoff vote.

Both were among 19 presidential candidates in Haiti’s flawed initial election in November. That vote was followed by protests, riots and outrage until earlier this month when an international team of experts from the Organization of American States found problems with the vote count and declared Martelly and Manigat the top two finishers.

Johannesburg, South Africa (CNN) — Haiti’s former president, Jean-Bertrand Aristide, said he is “ready” to return to the country from South Africa “today, tomorrow, at any time.” He did not offer any definite plans to go back to the ravaged country.

Aristide has been living in South Africa since fleeing Haiti during a violent uprising in 2004.

“Since my forced arrival in the Mother Continent six and a half years ago, the people of Haiti have never stopped calling for my return to Haiti,” he said in a statement, provided by South Africa’s foreign ministry Thursday.

“Despite the enormous challenges that they face in the aftermath of the deadly January 12, 2010, earthquake, their determination to make the return happen has increased.”

Aristide said he wants to go back home to serve Haitians “as a simple citizen in the field of education.”

“The return is indispensable, too, for medical reasons,” he added.

He said that he has had six eye surgeries in the six years he has lived in South Africa.

“The surgeons are excellent and very well skilled, but the unbearable pain experienced in the winter must be avoided in order to reduce any risk of further complications and blindness,” he said.

Aristide, a former priest, is a controversial figure in Haiti. His administration was accused of widespread corruption. But his left-wing views appealed to the poorest of the poor, many of whom have called for his return in recent years.

He spoke after the poor nation was thrown into turmoil by the unexpected return of former dictator Jean-Claude “Baby Doc” Duvalier this week.

Though Duvalier faces charges of financial wrongdoing and possibly human rights abuses, the former dictator has no plans to leave his homeland, one of his lawyers said Wednesday.

Attorney Reynold Georges told CNN that Duvalier would fight any charges against him and could very well get back into politics.

“You can bet your life on it,” Georges said, referring to Duvalier’s intention to remain in Haiti, adding that Duvalier is looking into renovating one of his old homes.

Duvalier made a brief appearance Wednesday, stepping out onto a balcony of the Karibe Hotel and waving to dozens of supporters. “I will see you later,” he said.

PORT-AU-PRINCE — Former dictator Jean-Claude “Baby Doc” Duvalier made a surprise return to Haiti on Sunday in the midst of a political vacuum left by disputed presidential elections.

Returning to his homeland after 25 years in the political wilderness, most of them spent in exile in France, Duvalier did not explain the reason for his return, telling reporters at the airport, simply: “I’ve come to help.”

The sudden re-emergence of Duvalier, 59, who an AFP reporter saw at immigration in a blue suit and tie, only added to the intrigue in earthquake-ravaged Haiti, as efforts to find a successor to President Rene Preval have fallen into disarray.

Duvalier’s partner Veronique Roy described to AFP how the former dictator bent to his knees and kissed the ground as he set foot on home soil for the first time since his violent ouster in 1986.

“Haiti my country, the country of Dessalines,” she quoted him as declaring, in reference to independence hero Jean-Jacques Dessalines who drove the French out and made himself emperor.

Roy suggested the couple’s return had been prompted by the devastating earthquake almost exactly a year ago that killed nearly a quarter of a million Haitians.

“That was the trigger,” she told AFP. “It’s so emotional. We were not expecting this welcome.”

A delegation of former officials who had served as cabinet ministers under Duvalier awaited his arrival at the airport and a few hundred supporters were gathered outside.

Duvalier was ousted by a popular revolt after his family and supporters were accused of plundering tens of millions of dollars of state funds during his 15-year reign.
The university said Wednesday that earth and atmospheric sciences professor Eric Calais is taking a leave of absence to serve a one-year term as science adviser for the United Nations Development Program.

Haiti was hit by a magnitude 7 earthquake Jan. 12. It caused widespread destruction and killed about 200,000 people. Calais has studied Haitian earthquake faults since 1989 and says it’s important to “develop strategies to reduce the potential for devastation and protect people’s lives.” He’ll assist Haiti’s government in creating an earthquake readiness agency.

The Union of South American Nations (Unasur), a regional grouping, on Tuesday, August 31, 2010 pledged 100 million dollars in money to assist reconstruction efforts in Haiti after January’s devastating earthquake.

Ecuador’s President Rafael Correa announced the donation during an official visit to Haiti, and said Unasur would also establish a political and technical secretariat in the country to assist with reconstruction plans.

“The 100 million dollars will be paid before the end of the year and we are going to deliver 200 million dollars in the longer term in the framework of reconstruction projects in Haiti,” Correa told a press conference with his Haitian counterpart Rene Preval.

Correa, who currently holds Unasur’s rotating presidency, arrived in Port-au-Prince on Monday night and travelled by helicopter to the country’s north to survey projects being financed by the group and implemented by troops from the organization’s member states.

“We do not want to exercise humanitarian imperialism in Haiti,” he said.

“We want to begin a new form of South-South cooperation, respecting the sovereignty of the Haitian people, and with the belief that the real development actors in Haiti are the Haitian people.”
