NASSAU, Bahamas – The government of the Bahamas says undocumented Haitian immigrants no longer have a free pass to stay in the country. The Immigration Department is advising anyone in the island chain illegally to go home or be subject to arrest and deportation.
The government temporarily halted roundups of mainly Haitian immigrants following the devastating Jan. 12 earthquake that killed an estimated 300,000 people in and around Port-au-Prince, Haiti. But the department said Monday in a statement that the government is compelled to resume immigration enforcement.
It said the number of Haitians trying to enter illegally has been increasing over the last six months and in particular during the last two weeks.
