In Port-au-Prince, Haiti today, it didn’t take much for the Haitian police to show how cruel they can be while Haiti is on the world stage. Haitian police shot and killed a man they suspected of stealing bags of rice in earthquake-ravaged Port-au-Prince on Thursday, January 21, 2010 and leaving his body on the sidewalk for hours as his family mourned.
The man was identified by his mother as Gentile Cherie, a 20-year-old carpenter. His two companions were also shot but they survived and were not identified. Witnesses say no looting occurred at the time but a shop owner said he saw 5 bags of rice fall from a truck passing by. A CNN crew heard 4 gunshots while getting out of their car, saw 2 men on ground, and shot in back.
In the past, Haiti’s police have been accused of human rights abuses. This time, the abuses happened while Haiti is on a big stage.
